Wisconsin plumber license: requirements, reciprocity & renewal

Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) runs plumbing licensing in Wisconsin. Below: the exact ladder, the transfer doors into Wisconsin from all 50 states, the renewal and lapse lines, and the master-of-record rule for opening a company — every figure from the board's own publications, checked October 22, 2026.

State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master Checked in part Checked October 22, 2026

Checked in part. Checked 2026-10-22 against Wis. Stat. §§ 145.07 and 106.025 and the WI Department of Workforce Development apprenticeship page. The apprenticeship-only route, its hours (7,428 on-the-job + 572 paid related instruction = 8,000 over a 5-year indenture) and the master rule (1,000 hrs/yr for 3+ years as a WI journeyman) are primary-confirmed. DSPS's current credential fee amounts and the 24-hour CE figure appear in DSPS Table SPS 305.02 / secondary renewal guides that could not be re-read as primary text in this pass, so exam.fee and licenseFee are null; renewal cycle/CE are given as published by DSPS renewal guidance.

How you qualify in Wisconsin

Registration, in the board’s terms: There is effectively ONE route: §145.07(4) requires evidence of completion of a plumbing apprenticeship under §106.025. Every plumbing apprentice must be indentured; the term is 5 years (extendable by up to 1 year). After the apprenticeship term expires, an apprentice may not work as an apprentice or journeyman until licensed as a journeyman. Wisconsin also licenses Journeyman Plumber (Restricted) levels for limited work.

The master license in Wisconsin

Master Plumber: A specific record of not less than 1,000 hours per year of experience for 3 or more years as a licensed journeyman plumber IN Wisconsin — OR graduation in engineering from a department-approved school or college (§145.07(3)). Then pass the master examination. Wisconsin also has a Master Plumber (Restricted) level: 1,000 hrs/yr for 2+ years as a journeyman (restricted).

Because the standard master route requires journeyman experience specifically as a Wisconsin-licensed journeyman, an out-of-state master cannot simply endorse in — see reciprocity.

Renewal & lapse in Wisconsin

Under the general credential statute, Wis. Stat. §440.08(3), a holder who misses the renewal date may restore the credential by paying the renewal fee plus a $25 late renewal fee; the department may by rule impose additional restoration requirements on holders who fail to renew within 5 years.

Reinstatement: After the renewal date: restore by paying the applicable renewal fee plus the $25 late renewal fee (§440.08(3)(a)), with required CE completed.

Past the line: Failed to renew within 5 years: DSPS may require additional requirements to restore the credential, up to — but not more extensive than — the education/examination requirements for an initial credential (§440.08(3)(b)).

Plumbing license reciprocity into Wisconsin

Wisconsin endorses journeyman licenses from: none. No reciprocity or endorsement path appears in §145.07: a journeyman applicant must show completion of a Wisconsin plumbing apprenticeship under §106.025, and the standard master route requires experience as a journeyman licensed in Wisconsin. No state is accepted at journeyman level.

Opening a plumbing company in Wisconsin

The seat: Master Plumber (responsible charge). Plumbing work in Wisconsin must be performed by or under a licensed master plumber: the master is the level that may contract for plumbing work and take responsible charge of installations, and journeymen and apprentices work under that structure (Wis. Stat. ch. 145). A business operates through its licensed master plumber in responsible charge.

Wisconsin's 5-year indenture is the longest standard apprenticeship term in this batch, and it is mandatory — there is no experience-only or out-of-state shortcut around §106.025 for the journeyman license.
