State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master
Montana Board of Plumbers, Department of Labor and Industry (Business Standards Division) runs plumbing licensing in Montana. Below: the exact ladder, the transfer doors into Montana from all 50 states, the renewal and lapse lines, and the master-of-record rule for opening a company — every figure from the board's own publications, checked October 22, 2026.
State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master Checked in part Checked October 22, 2026
Checked in part. Experience, examination, CE, reciprocity and ownership rules confirmed on the Montana Board of Plumbers' own pages/checklists (MCA 37-69-304/305; ARM 24.180.504) on 2026-10-22. The Board's current web pages state only that all fees are not returned, without printing current amounts (secondary sources conflict), so licenseFee and exam fees are null; a post-expiration reinstatement window was likewise not stated on a primary page fetched, so reinstateUpToMonths is null.
| The ladder | Montana |
|---|---|
| Journeyman credential | Journeyman Plumber |
| Total hours required | 7,500 |
| Classroom hours | not published |
| Apprentice registration | Not required by the state |
| Exam | IAPMO — Exams are offered by IAPMO (Board FAQ). Journeyman requires BOTH a written and a practical examination, passing score 70% or better (Board journeyman page). Exam fee not printed on the Board's current license pages, so fee is null. |
| License fee | Not published |
| Renewal | Every 1 year — licenses expire annually on September 1 |
| Continuing education | 4 hours annually of Board-approved, code-related continuing education (new licensees are exempt during their first renewal cycle; licensees moving from journeyman to master are not exempt) |
| Master credential | Master Plumber |
Registration, in the board’s terms: Montana does not run a separate state apprentice-registration tier for plumbers on the Board's published requirements; the gate is experience: an experience-verification affidavit of 5 years of legally obtained experience in the field of plumbing, vouched for by an active licensed master plumber or plumbing contractor. The Board checklist (under MCA 37-69-304 / ARM 24.180.504) quantifies the non-apprenticeship route as a minimum of 7,500 aggregate hours over not less than 5 years. Completion of a registered apprenticeship program is the alternative route. Trade-school time can be credited toward the experience requirement as provided in the rule.
Master Plumber: Four years of legally obtained experience as a licensed journeyman, with 3 of those years working either in a supervisory capacity or with a licensed master plumber — 9 years of total plumbing experience verified by notarized statements or letters — + pass the Montana master examination at 70% or better (Board master page / MCA 37-69-305).
Montana does NOT reciprocate a master license from any state (Board FAQ); out-of-state masters must qualify and examine in Montana.
Licenses expire annually on September 1 with 4 hours of CE due for renewal. The Board's published pages fetched on 2026-10-22 describe administrative suspension for non-renewal but do not state a fixed post-expiration reinstatement window.
Reinstatement: Not confirmed on a primary source in this batch — late-renewal terms and any re-examination trigger must be checked in ARM 24.180 / with the Board before publication.
Past the line: Not confirmed on a primary source in this batch.
Montana endorses journeyman licenses from: Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota. Journeyman ONLY (Board FAQ, primary): Montana has reciprocity agreements for journeyman licensure with Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota. If you passed BOTH the written and practical journeyman exams in one of those states and your active license has no complaints, you do not retake the Montana journeyman exam; if you never took a practical exam you must take one under ARM 24.180.603. You must still apply for the Montana license — the out-of-state license alone does not authorise work in Montana. Montana does not reciprocate a master license.

The seat: Master Plumber (permit holder). Board FAQ (primary): a non-plumber MAY own a plumbing business, but a master plumber license is required to obtain plumbing permits — only master plumbers are authorised to apply for and obtain permits, and a journeyman's license does not authorise the holder to obtain a permit or to engage in or advertise as a plumbing business.
Montana has exactly two classes of plumbing licensure — Journeyman and Master (Board FAQ). Field-compliance note from the Board's checklist tradition: experience must be 'legally obtained' in the field of plumbing; applicants from states with no journeyman/master licensing must prove the equivalent 5 years (journeyman) / 9 years (master) by experience-verification affidavit or notarized letters.
