Maine plumber license: requirements, reciprocity & renewal

Plumbers' Examining Board, Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation runs plumbing licensing in Maine. Below: the exact ladder, the transfer doors into Maine from all 50 states, the renewal and lapse lines, and the master-of-record rule for opening a company — every figure from the board's own publications, checked October 22, 2026.

State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master Checked in part Checked October 22, 2026

Checked in part. Hours, license fees, terms, and the late-renewal ladder are from the Board's own licensing page. The page does not name the examination vendor or an exam fee (secondary sites variously claim ProV or Prometric at $65), so exam.fee is null; and no insurance minimum for master plumbers is published on the Board page, so insuranceMin is null.

How you qualify in Maine

Registration, in the board’s terms: Maine licenses its entry level as a Trainee Plumber (fee $100 + $21 criminal background check, 2-year term), who must work under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or master plumber. A second entry license, Journeyman-in-Training ($200 + $21, 4-year non-renewable term), is for graduates of a board-approved 1-year/2-semester community-college plumbing program or a 2-year CTE / U.S. DOL apprenticeship program.

The master license in Maine

Master Plumber: At least 1 year / 2,000 hours as a licensed Journeyman Plumber, OR at least 4 years / 8,000 hours as a licensed Trainee Plumber under a Master Plumber; pass the master examination. Fee $200 + $21 background check; biennial renewal $200.

Maine licenses individuals, not companies — there is no separate business or contractor license at the Board.

Renewal & lapse in Maine

The Board publishes a graduated late-renewal ladder, the same for journeyman and master licenses.

Reinstatement: Renewed up to 90 days after expiration: $50 late fee. More than 90 days but not more than 2 years after expiration: $200 license fee plus a $100 penalty.

Past the line: Expired more than 2 years: the applicant is subject to all requirements governing new applicants (new application and examination). Trainee licenses are stricter: more than 90 days late already triggers new-applicant requirements.

Plumbing license reciprocity into Maine

Maine endorses journeyman licenses from: none. 32 M.R.S. 3403-A authorises the Board to adopt reciprocity rules with states maintaining standards equivalent to Maine's, but the Board's licensing page names no reciprocal state, so any endorsement is by board review of equivalence, not from a published state list. (A secondary claim of a New Hampshire agreement was not confirmed on a primary source and is not used.)

Opening a plumbing company in Maine

The seat: Master Plumber. Maine licenses individuals only, not businesses. The Master Plumber is the license class defined as engaging in the business of installing plumbing and plumbing systems, so a non-plumber owner must operate through a licensed Master Plumber.
