Idaho plumber license: requirements, reciprocity & renewal

Idaho Plumbing Board, Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) runs plumbing licensing in Idaho. Below: the exact ladder, the transfer doors into Idaho from all 50 states, the renewal and lapse lines, and the master-of-record rule for opening a company — every figure from the board's own publications, checked October 22, 2026.

State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master Checked in part Checked October 22, 2026

Checked in part. Current dollar amounts for application, examination, and certificate fees (set by Idaho Code 54-2614/54-2616) were not published on the DOPL pages retrieved on 2026-10-22, so fee fields are null. The reciprocity state list and its holding-period conditions come from DOPL-linked guidance (College of Southern Idaho apprenticeship/licensure page, which follows DOPL) rather than a DOPL agreement page retrieved directly. The ladder, hours, schooling, contractor, CE, and 12-month revival rules are from IDAPA 07.02.05 itself.

How you qualify in Idaho

Registration, in the board’s terms: Apprentices must register with the Division before going to work (minimum age 16) and complete Board-approved related instruction for 4 years — a minimum of 144 hours per school year (576 total) with at least a 70% grade average — while working under the constant on-the-job supervision of a journeyman plumber and in the employ of a plumbing contractor (IDAPA 07.02.05.011).

The master license in Idaho

Plumbing Contractor (Idaho's top tier — there is no state 'Master Plumber' title): Hold an active Idaho journeyman certificate and show a minimum of 2.5 years of experience as a licensed journeyman plumber in Idaho, pass the plumbing contractor examination, and file the compliance bond required by Idaho Code 54-2606 (IDAPA 07.02.05.013). A contractor certificate holder represents one firm only.

Out-of-state journeymen must first obtain the Idaho journeyman certificate; 2.5 years of journeyman experience in a recognized jurisdiction can substitute for the Idaho experience. The compliance bond amount is not stated in the rule excerpt retrieved.

Renewal & lapse in Idaho

Certificates that are not timely renewed expire (IDAPA 07.02.05.016.03).

Reinstatement: An expired certificate may be revived within 12 months of expiration by submitting a completed application, paying the same fee as for an initial certificate, and meeting all other certification requirements (IDAPA 07.02.05.016.03).

Past the line: After 12 months the plumbing rules provide no revival path — the applicant must qualify and apply as a new applicant.

Plumbing license reciprocity into Idaho

Idaho endorses journeyman licenses from: Montana, Oregon, Washington. Idaho reciprocates at the journeyman level only, with Montana, Oregon, and Washington, for applicants who tested for their license and completed 4 years of schooling and on-the-job training (conditions reported in DOPL-linked guidance: Montana license held at least 1 year; Oregon at least 6 months; Washington applicants must be current Washington residents). All other out-of-state applicants take the Idaho examinations, though their licensed experience counts toward eligibility under IDAPA 07.02.05.012.03.
