How you qualify in Alaska

Registration, in the board’s terms: Work begins under a Trainee Certificate of Fitness: the worker must be sponsored by an employer in the federal Registered Apprenticeship Program and submit the RAPIDS/Davis-Bacon registration letter with the Trainee application (Mechanical Inspection FAQ). Hours count only for a credentialed contractor, under direct journey-level supervision, on code work; maintenance work does not qualify (8 AAC 90.890). From 2025, vocational/military credit is accepted but capped at half the required hours (4,000 for Plumber Journeyman). No fixed classroom-hour total is published on the primary forms, so classroomHours is null.

The master license in Alaska

No state Master Plumber license — Mechanical Administrator (separate license): Alaska does not issue a master plumber license. The master-equivalent function is the Mechanical Administrator license issued by the Department of Commerce, Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing, which covers supervision and sign-off of code work (Mechanical Inspection FAQ).

An Administrator license alone does not authorize performing code work; a person may hold both an Administrator license and a journeyman Certificate of Fitness, which together function like a master license in other states (Mechanical Inspection FAQ).

Renewal & lapse in Alaska

Certificates are issued for two years. Renewal may begin 90 days before expiration. Renewals more than two years after expiration require retesting (COF renewal form).

Reinstatement: Renew within 90 days after expiration with the application fee waived; after 90 days, add the $50 application fee to the $200 certificate fee, with 16 hours of CE certificates (COF renewal form).

Past the line: A certificate expired for more than two years requires re-application and retesting.

Plumbing license reciprocity into Alaska

Alaska endorses journeyman licenses from: none. As of August 8, 2025, Mechanical Inspection accepts reciprocity applications for Plumber Journeyman COFs from other U.S. states and jurisdictions without requiring a mutual agreement (FAQ) — the route is universal rather than a named state list, so accepts is empty. A Provisional COF ($150 application and certificate fee) lets an out-of-state licensee work for up to 1 year (no fuel-gas work, no trainee supervision) while a reciprocal application is processed; the reciprocal certificate is issued for a full two years and is renewable.

Opening a plumbing company in Alaska

The seat: Mechanical Administrator. Mechanical Inspection issues no business, contractor, or administrator licenses (FAQ). A plumbing business operates under the contractor/administrator licensing of the Department of Commerce (CBPL): an Administrator covers supervision and sign-off of code work but cannot perform code work on the administrator license alone.

Statewide Certificate of Fitness for workers; contractor and administrator licensing is a separate state layer (Dept. of Commerce), not a city system.
